Cat Cremation in Wales: what to know
Cat owners across Wales face the same hard moment, but the practical steps can differ a lot between a high-rise apartment with two indoor cats and a farmhouse with a barn full of them. Use this page for the regional picture, then open your own city below for local weather, costs and pickup advice.
In Wales, as in most places, the vet is where the process usually starts. That's no bad thing: vets see loss often and work with local crematories. But you're not obliged to use the provider your vet suggests. Calling a crematory directly, or bringing your cat in yourself, is normal and can save money for exactly the same service.

Why cremation is familiar in Wales, or isn't
High cremation rates, about 80.46%[1] for people in Wales, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) publishes the Wales rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What cat owners in Wales typically pay
The CMA found that only 52%[2] of UK cremation buyers remembered being given price information. Under the CMA's 2026 remedies, vets are required to offer a communal option and set out their prices[3], so in Wales it's reasonable to ask for a written list. Independent crematoria published an average individual price of about £160 for a cat[4], noticeably less than the large groups.
In the UK, communal cremation costs 2x to 5x cheaper[5] than individual cremation for the same size pet. Many families in Wales don't realise they can arrange a cat's cremation directly with a pet crematorium rather than through the vet; the CMA found 89%[6] of owners who bought a cremation never compared providers at all.
| Where you buy it | Typical price for a cat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Large vet groups (median) | GBP 186.87[7] | Through your vet practice |
| Independent vet practices (median) | about £128[8] | Sample checked by the CMA, incl. VAT |
| Independent crematoria (published) | about £160[4] | Contact the crematorium directly |
| Communal cremation | 2x to 5x cheaper[5] | Than individual, for the same pet |

What's allowed in Wales after your cat dies
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Wales and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
In the UK, cats live in 31%[10] of households, and microchipping became compulsory for cats in England in 2024, so remember to update the database after your cat dies. The Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so ask for a price list. Independent pet crematoria often charge less and many will collect from home.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, then have the provider put that choice in writing.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this. What comes back from a cat is small enough to keep in a modest container on a shelf until you know what you want.
Keeping your cat close
Many people who have lost a cat find the quiet the hardest part: no voice at the kitchen door in the morning, no weight at the foot of the bed. Grief for a cat can be as heavy as any other loss. Pet-loss support lines, online groups and local counsellors in Wales all exist for exactly this, and using them is a sign of how much your cat mattered.

Questions people ask
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Wales?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
How do UK cat cremation prices compare between vets and independent crematoria?
The CMA found individual cat cremation through the large vet groups had a median of about GBP 186.87[7], while independent crematoria published an average of about £160[4]. Across Wales, it's worth asking your vet which crematorium they use and comparing it with one or two independents.
How much does cat cremation cost in Wales?
Prices across Wales depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
How many cat-owning households are there in Wales?
Across the 2 communities we cover in Wales, we estimate about 94,000 households have a cat. That's the sum of our per-city estimates, based on population, household size and national cat-ownership rates. It leaves out rural areas outside those communities, and many homes have more than one cat, so the true number of cats is higher.
Is cat cremation common in Wales?
For people, about 80.46%[1] of deaths in Wales end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their cat close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and cities where many cats live indoors.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Wales?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
