Rules worth knowing in Scotland
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Scotland and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
In the UK, cats live in 31%[1] of households, and microchipping became compulsory for cats in England in 2024, so remember to update the database after your cat dies. The Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so ask for a price list. Independent pet crematoria often charge less and many will collect from home.
