Why cremation is familiar in England, or isn't
With cremation chosen for roughly 83.0%[3] of the population in England, the choice of method is widening too. Some pet crematories near Windsor now offer water-based cremation (aquamation), which uses warm water and alkali rather than flame and still returns ashes. If the gentler process appeals, ask whether it's offered for cats and how the price compares with a private cremation.

Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what England allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
In the UK, cats live in 31%[1] of households, and microchipping became compulsory for cats in England in 2024, so remember to update the database after your cat dies. The Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so ask for a price list. Independent pet crematoria often charge less and many will collect from home.

A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often empty, which is ordinary.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes the box or basket easier and the goodbye gentler.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Windsor. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.

How many cat owners live in Windsor?
