Cat cremation in Brighton: how it usually works
Brighton and Hove is a city of Regency terraces, converted flats, narrow Victorian streets and steep hills running up from the seafront, and parking is notoriously tight. If you'd like your pet collected from home, mention the floor, the stairs, whether there's a lift and where a vehicle can realistically stop. Many residents don't drive, so home collection is often the most practical option here.
Many Brighton families feel drawn to the South Downs when they think of remembering a pet: the open chalk hills at Devil's Dyke, the woods above Stanmer Park, or the long view back over the sea. Scattering ashes on National Park land or a beach is often done quietly, but it's courteous to check with the landowner first. Keeping ashes at home avoids any doubt.
Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Brighton, and they suit cats especially well. A cat who hates the carrier can stay in their favorite chair or sunny window, and the other cats in the house can see what happened. In-home euthanasia vets often cover a wide area around Brighton, so book as early as you can, and ask whether they can hand your cat straight to a crematory afterwards.
Brighton is home to about 290,000 people, the 12th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is London, about 47 miles (76 km) away, which is where some providers serving Brighton are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Guildford (34 miles), Portsmouth (42 miles) and Richmond (45 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
37,500
How many cat-owning households Brighton has (estimate)
How we calculated this
290,000 ÷ 2.4 = 120,833 households; × 31% (cat) = 37,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
37,500 cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 3,200 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Why cremation is familiar in England, or isn't
In England, about 83.0%[3] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.
The England figure comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Brighton weather and timing
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Brighton where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

Cat cremation prices for Brighton families
The CMA found that only 52%[5] of UK cremation buyers remembered being given price information. Under the CMA's 2026 remedies, vets are required to offer a communal option and set out their prices[6], so in Brighton it's reasonable to ask for a written list. Independent crematoria published an average individual price of about £160 for a cat[7], noticeably less than the large groups.
The full price table by size is on our England page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules worth knowing in England
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which England and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
In the UK, cats live in 31%[1] of households, and microchipping became compulsory for cats in England in 2024, so remember to update the database after your cat dies. The Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so ask for a price list. Independent pet crematoria often charge less and many will collect from home.
We keep England's burial and scattering rules in one place: the England rules summary. Before a home burial in Brighton, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Step by step in Brighton
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
- Ask to see your cat if you weren't there. Most hospitals will bring your cat to a quiet room wrapped in a blanket, and many owners say it helped more than they expected.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or ask the team to send the blanket with your cat.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Brighton's seaside climate is mild, breezy and often damp, with few very hot days and winters that rarely stay frozen for long. That gives you a little more time than in hotter places, but a pet's body should still be wrapped and kept in the coolest room, and collection arranged within a day or two. On a warm summer day, add ice packs near the body.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to London to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in London (roughly 47 miles from Brighton) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brighton?
Usually yes. Guildford is about 34 miles away, Portsmouth is about 42 miles away and Richmond is about 45 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Brighton big enough to have several cat aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 37,500 Brighton households keep a cat and around 3,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 290,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is cremation common in England?
For people, yes: about 83.0%[3] of England deaths end in cremation, according to Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Brighton follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[9], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[10], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[11]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
Did most UK owners choose cremation for their pet?
Yes. In the CMA's survey, 67%[12] of UK owners whose pet had died in the previous two years chose cremation, while 27% buried their pet at home[13]. Very few compared providers. If you have a day to spare, a call to an independent crematorium near Brighton can save money for the same individual cremation.
