Cat cremation near Stockholm: costs and choices

Stockholm, Sweden

Getting help for your cat in Stockholm

Stockholm families make the most of Djurgården, the waterfront paths and the forests at the edge of the city, and many spend summers in the archipelago. Pets are often part of all of it, from the summer cottage to a sunny balcony in town. Many owners here ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home or go to a place that mattered. Confirm the type of cremation in writing.

Stockholm is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and most people in the inner city live in apartment buildings, often without a lift in the older blocks of Södermalm and Vasastan. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option here, so home collection and cremation is the usual choice. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking when you get in touch, since these affect how collection works.

If your cat died at an emergency or specialty hospital in Stockholm, aftercare is usually arranged from there, and it may be with a different crematory from the one your regular vet uses. You're free to ask for your cat to be transferred to the provider you prefer. It usually takes one phone call, and it's worth making if you want a witnessed cremation, a particular urn or simply a clearer price.

Stockholm's population is around 975,000.

84.69%[1]

In 2023, 84.69% of deaths in Sweden were cremated (58 crematoria).

clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[2]

CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A cat at home in Stockholm

Cremation in Sweden, and what it means for cat owners

High cremation rates, about 84.69%[1] for people in Sweden, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.

We take the Sweden rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Stockholm, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

How Stockholm's weather affects the first few hours

Whatever the season, ask any provider near Stockholm where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What cat owners in Stockholm typically pay

Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[4], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Stockholm. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[5], which is longer than many owners expect.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sweden: Sweden costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What's allowed in Sweden after your cat dies

If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Sweden says about burial and scattering.

Sweden has about 1,732,000[7] pet cats, well ahead of its dogs. Vets such as AniCura usually quote euthanasia with collective cremation, with separate (individual) cremation costing extra. Ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[5], sometimes longer. Ask specifically for separate cremation if you want your cat's ashes returned.

A simple checklist for the next two days

  1. If the death was expected, you and your vet probably agreed arrangements earlier. Phone and check they still stand.
  2. If it was sudden, whether an illness, a fall or a road accident, ring your vet or the nearest emergency clinic in or near Stockholm. They'll guide you through the next hour.
  3. Keep your cat cool and indoors, in a box with a lid and a towel around them, which matters most when the weather is warm.
  4. Gather a few things to send with your cat, like a favorite blanket, a toy mouse or a note from the children.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
  6. Confirm the price in writing before collection, including pickup and the container.

Keeping your cat's memory close in Stockholm

Stockholm's winters are long and dark, with cold snaps and snow, while summers are short and light, with long evenings. In winter a cool room gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body away from radiators and on a blanket. Around midsummer and the July holiday weeks, when much of Sweden is on holiday, ask about timing and storage.

Questions people ask

Why does the Stockholm page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 84.69%[1] of Sweden residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Why did my cat hide before they died?

Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.

Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?

Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.

What happens if my cat dies at night or on a weekend in Stockholm?

Keep your cat somewhere cool, in a lined box with the door closed, and call your nearest emergency vet if you want advice; in a city like Stockholm there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your cat until your regular vet or crematory opens. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.

Should my other cats see the cat who died?

Many owners let their other cats sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes before collection, and it does no harm. Some cats show interest, others walk away; both are normal. Afterwards, keep feeding and litter routines steady. If a remaining cat stops eating for more than a day or two, call your vet, as cats don't cope well with going without food.

Can someone collect my cat from home in Stockholm?

Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Stockholm offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
