Cat Cremation in Catalonia: what to know
If you're reading this because your cat is old or unwell, you're already doing something kind: planning ahead. Cats hide illness well, so the end often comes faster than owners expect. In Catalonia, one phone call to your vet or a crematory now can settle the big questions, so that when the time comes you can focus on your cat.
Community cats are part of life across Catalonia: colonies behind shops, farm cats, the neighbor's cat who adopted your porch. When one of them dies, the person who cared for them often has no idea what's allowed. You can arrange a private or communal cremation for a cat you didn't legally own, and many Catalonia rescues know low-cost options. The city pages below list local detail.

How Catalonia thinks about cremation
Cremation is chosen for about 50.11%[1] of people in Catalonia, but plenty of households here have always buried their cats under a favorite tree. Both are loving choices. We'd only suggest choosing on purpose rather than by default: find out what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your cat, your home and your plans.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Catalonia rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[2], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[3]. Prices in Catalonia depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.
In Catalonia, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |

What Catalonia allows: burial, scattering and more
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in Catalonia mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.
Spain is one of the European countries where dogs outnumber cats, with about 6.0 million pet cats[6]. Most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange incineración individual, which returns your cat's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and are often strict in towns.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email so they can keep your cat until you're back. With a call in advance, most practices around Catalonia will take a cat brought in by a sitter.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. The clinic can keep them for several days if that's your wish; when you're a long way from home, a photograph taken by the vet may be a kinder option.
- Arrange the cremation remotely if you need to. Providers take instructions and payment by phone, and the ashes can wait at the clinic for you.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.
Remembering your cat in Catalonia
Keeping your cat's ashes at home is the most common choice, and there's no time limit. When you're ready, you might move them into an engraved urn, share a little with family, or bury them under a plant in a pot that can move house with you.

Questions people ask
Do cats outnumber dogs in Catalonia?
In much of Europe, yes: the continent has about 108.3 million[7] pet cats against 89.6 million[8] dogs. The balance differs by country, and in a few places dogs still lead. Either way, every pet crematorium in Catalonia handles cats routinely, and individual cremation for a cat sits in the lowest price band.
How many communities do you cover in Catalonia?
We currently have local cat cremation guides for 1 communities in Catalonia, including Barcelona. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
How much does cat cremation cost in Catalonia?
Prices across Catalonia depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Catalonia?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Catalonia?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
Where can I scatter my cat's ashes in Catalonia?
Your own garden is the simplest place, and private land with the owner's permission is fine too. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules. Because a cat's ashes are only a cup or so, many families scatter a little and keep the rest in a small urn or keepsake at home.
