Cat cremation near Palma de Mallorca: costs and choices

Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands

Cat aftercare in Palma de Mallorca: the local picture

Most families in Palma live in apartments, from old-town flats with narrow stairways to newer blocks in the suburbs, while others have houses and fincas on the edges of the city. In the old town, streets can be too narrow for a vehicle to stop outside, so mention the nearest access point when you ask for options. Your vet is a good starting point, as many clinics on Mallorca arrange cremation.

Being on an island shapes aftercare in Palma. Pet cremation services are available on Mallorca, but the choice of providers is smaller than in Barcelona or Valencia, so ask early what is offered locally, whether individual cremation is available, and how long it will take to get the ashes back. For a private garden burial, check local rules first, as they differ between municipalities.

Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Palma de Mallorca, and they suit cats especially well. A cat who hates the carrier can stay in their favorite chair or sunny window, and the other cats in the house can see what happened. In-home euthanasia vets often cover a wide area around Palma de Mallorca, so book as early as you can, and ask whether they can hand your cat straight to a crematory afterwards.

Palma de Mallorca's population is around 409,000.

The closest communities we cover are Barcelona (128 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Palma de Mallorca too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Cremation in Spain, and what it means for cat owners

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Spain, at about 50.11%[1], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll see both among cat owners. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, and a cat's small amount of ash makes cremation easy to live with. Neither is more proper than the other.

That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Palma de Mallorca only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Weather, timing and your cat in Palma de Mallorca

Seasonal weather also shapes what happens afterwards. Scattering in wind or burying ashes in wet or frozen soil is harder than it sounds, so many families in Palma de Mallorca keep the urn at home for a while and choose a calm, dry day for any outdoor memorial. There's no time limit on ashes.

What cat owners in Palma de Mallorca typically pay

In Palma de Mallorca, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Balearic Islands: Balearic Islands costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules for Balearic Islands

One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.

Spain is one of the European countries where dogs outnumber cats, with about 6.0 million pet cats[5]. Most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange incineración individual, which returns your cat's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and are often strict in towns.

What to do next, one step at a time

  1. Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your cat died at home, lay them on a towel, close their eyes if you can and tuck their legs in as if they were sleeping.
  2. Take anything you want to keep now: a small clipping of fur from the chest or behind a back leg, shed whiskers from their bed, their collar or tag.
  3. Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
  4. Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
  5. Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
  6. Arrange collection either from the house or the vet's, or take your cat to the provider yourself, and get the full cost written down.
  7. Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your cat, and put the bowls away when you're ready, not before.

Remembering your cat in Palma de Mallorca

Palma summers are hot and humid, and the island fills with visitors from June to September, which slows traffic around the Bay of Palma and the airport. If your pet dies in summer, keep them cool indoors with the shutters closed and cold packs around them, and contact your vet or a provider promptly. In the mild winter, you have a little more time to plan.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Spain?

For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Palma de Mallorca follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?

Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.

How much ash will I get back from my cat?

Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[6], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[4]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.

Is individual cat cremation available in Palma de Mallorca?

In most European cities, yes. Pet crematoria usually offer collective cremation, where ashes aren't returned, and individual cremation, where they are. Your vet can arrange either, or you can contact a crematorium directly. Ask for a written price for a cat and confirmation that the cremation is individual. Some crematoria also let you attend.

What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Palma de Mallorca?

Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.

How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Palma de Mallorca?

Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[7]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Palma de Mallorca, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
