Porto, Portugal
Getting help for your cat in Porto
Porto families often associate a pet with the riverside along the Douro, the parks, or the seafront at Foz. Pet cremation has become more common in Portugal, and a private cremation returns ashes that you can keep at home or scatter later, with permission for that place. A communal cremation, without ashes returned, costs less and is a respectful option if a keepsake isn't important to you.
Porto is a city of steep streets, granite stairways and tall, narrow buildings, and many residents live in apartments without lifts, especially in the historic centre. If your pet dies at home, collection can spare you carrying your pet down several flights and across a hill. When you ask for options, mention your parish or neighbourhood, the floor you live on and whether a car can stop outside.
In a city like Porto, the usual route is still through your vet, who will have a standing arrangement with a crematory. It's perfectly fine to ask which one they use, what a private cremation for a cat costs there and whether you can speak to the crematory yourself. Cats sit in the lowest price band almost everywhere, so if a quote feels high, it's reasonable to ask why.
Porto's population is around 237,000.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[1]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
3-5% of body weight[2]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Portugal thinks about cremation
We don't have a reliable cremation figure for Portugal, but in every country we cover, more cat owners now want the ashes returned. In Porto, start by asking your vet which crematory they work with, whether individual cremation is available and how the ashes will reach you.
What the seasons mean for cat owners in Porto
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Porto where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation costs: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[3], for example. Check your policy before you pay in Porto. Also ask how long the ashes take; in Sweden, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[4], which is longer than many owners expect.

What Portugal allows: burial, scattering and more
You don't need a permit to have your cat cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them in the garden or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Portugal.
In Portugal, pet cremation is available through private crematoria, usually arranged by your vet, with individual or collective options. Municipal rules on burying pets vary, and in towns burial is often impractical. Ask for a written price in euros for a cat and confirmation that the ashes returned are your cat's alone.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email to hold your cat until you're home. Most clinics near Porto will accept a cat from a sitter if you call ahead.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. The clinic can keep them for several days if that's your wish; when you're a long way from home, a photograph taken by the vet may be a kinder option.
- Arrange the cremation remotely when coming home isn't possible yet. You can give instructions and pay over the phone, and the clinic will keep the ashes until you return.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. An elderly cat can go downhill in hours, and a sitter who rang for help acted exactly as they should have.
Keeping your cat close
Porto's Atlantic climate is mild, with wet, windy winters and warm summers that are usually tempered by sea breezes. Deep frost is rare. If your pet dies at home, keep the body cool: wrap your pet in a towel, place cold packs nearby and choose the coolest room. During a summer heatwave, treat collection as more urgent than in the cooler, damper months.

Questions people ask
Can I take my cat to the crematory myself?
Usually, yes, and with a cat it's easy. Call first to agree a time, then place your cat in a carrier or a box lined with a blanket, on the floor or back seat of the car, and drive straight there. Many families find this last drive meaningful. It also saves the collection fee, which for a cat can be a large part of the total.
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Porto?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[6]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Porto, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[7]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
How much does cat cremation cost in Porto?
Prices depend on the country and whether you choose individual or communal cremation, but cats are always in the lowest weight band. Published examples include about AUD 412 in Australia for pets up to 5 kg[8] and €250 in Ireland for cats up to 10 kg[9]. Ask Porto providers for a written quote in local currency that lists collection and the container.
What if my cat died outdoors or was hit by a car near Porto?
Bring gloves, a towel and a box, lift your cat gently and take them home or straight to your vet. A vet can scan for a microchip if you're not sure it's your cat, and can arrange cremation from there. A private cremation is still entirely possible, and so is a proper goodbye; the circumstances don't change that. Take someone with you if you can.
Is individual cat cremation available in Porto?
In most European cities, yes. Pet crematoria usually offer collective cremation, where ashes aren't returned, and individual cremation, where they are. Your vet can arrange either, or you can contact a crematorium directly. Ask for a written price for a cat and confirmation that the cremation is individual. Some crematoria also let you attend.
