Lisbon, Portugal
Who handles cat aftercare in Lisbon
Lisbon is a city of hills, stairs and narrow streets, and many pets live in older apartment buildings in Alfama, Graça, Campo de Ourique or Arroios, often several floors up with no lift. When you ask about collection, say which floor you are on, whether the stairwell is narrow, and whether a car can stop outside. On steep lanes where parking is almost impossible, a provider may need to plan how to reach your door.
Lisbon summers are hot and dry, and a heatwave can push temperatures well above 35°C, while winters are mild and wet. If your pet dies at home in summer, close the shutters, keep them in the coolest room on a towel and place cold packs near the body. In the cooler months, an unheated room usually gives you enough time to call your vet and let family say goodbye.
A city like Lisbon brings many cultures together, and pet aftercare reflects that. Some providers here can arrange a short prayer, incense, a candle or a family viewing before cremation, and some staff speak languages other than English. If a particular ritual matters to your family, mention it on the first call. Most small requests for a cat, like flowers or a note in the basket, cost nothing extra.
Lisbon's population is around 505,000, the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.
Lisbon sits within easy reach of Cascais (15 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Lisbon; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation traditions in Portugal
Attitudes to cremation vary from place to place, but for pets the direction in most countries is the same: more families bring their cat's ashes home. In Lisbon, the practical questions are simple. Who collects your cat, how are they identified, and when do the ashes come back?
What the seasons mean for cat owners in Lisbon
If you're caring for an older or ill cat in Lisbon, think about the weather ahead. Heat can make a cat with kidney or heart disease much weaker, and storms or icy spells can make it hard to reach a vet quickly. Ask your vet whether home visits are possible in bad weather, and save the number of the nearest out-of-hours clinic now.

Cat cremation prices for Lisbon families
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[3], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[4]. Prices in Lisbon depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.

What Portugal allows: burial, scattering and more
If your cat was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body after death and can poison a dog, fox or bird of prey that digs up a grave. That's why many authorities discourage burying euthanized pets anywhere animals can reach them, and why cremation is simpler for most families. The notes below show what Portugal says about burial and scattering.
In Portugal, pet cremation is available through private crematoria, usually arranged by your vet, with individual or collective options. Municipal rules on burying pets vary, and in towns burial is often impractical. Ask for a written price in euros for a cat and confirmation that the ashes returned are your cat's alone.
Step by step in Lisbon
- If the death was expected, your vet may already have a plan with you. Call them and confirm it.
- If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Lisbon. They will walk you through what to do next.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, in a box with a lid and a towel around them, which matters most when the weather is warm.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat: the blanket they loved, a well-chewed toy mouse, a card the kids have written.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
- Confirm the price in writing, pickup fee and container included, before anyone collects your cat.
Remembering your cat in Lisbon
Most aftercare in Lisbon is arranged in Portuguese, though many vets and providers are comfortable in English, which helps the city's large international community. Your vet is usually the first call: many practices can arrange cremation or explain the options. Ask whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or collective, and what is included in the price, such as collection and an urn.

Questions people ask
Why do quotes for the same cat cremation in Lisbon vary so much?
In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which container is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cat cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote, then compare the cremation line on its own.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
What happens if my cat dies at night or on a weekend in Lisbon?
Keep your cat somewhere cool, in a lined box with the door closed, and call your nearest emergency vet if you want advice; in a city like Lisbon there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your cat until your regular vet or crematory opens. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
Are there vets in Lisbon who will put my cat to sleep at home?
In a large city you'll usually find several mobile vets who offer in-home euthanasia, and many cat owners prefer it because it avoids the carrier and the car. At-home visits cost more than the clinic; for cats in the US, about 2.27x[6] the price. Book as early as you can, and ask whether the vet can take your cat for cremation afterwards.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[7]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
