Cat Cremation in Luxembourg: what to know
Families across Luxembourg increasingly bring their cat's ashes home rather than burying their cat in the garden, especially in cities where many cats live indoors and gardens are small or rented. Below you'll find what that costs, the local rules worth knowing and every Luxembourg city we cover.
Price quotes for a cat in Luxembourg should be in local currency, include any tax and list each piece separately: collection, the cremation itself, the container and extras like a paw print. Quotes that look very different often cover different things. Ask for a written total from two providers and compare like for like before you choose.

Cremation in Luxembourg, and what it means for cat owners
We don't have a reliable cremation figure for Luxembourg, but in every country we cover, more cat owners now want the ashes returned. In Luxembourg, start by asking your vet which crematory they work with, whether individual cremation is available and how the ashes will reach you.
How much to budget for your cat
Across Europe, about 9.2 million[1] pet cats die each year, by our estimate, so every pet crematorium near Luxembourg handles cats routinely. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether you can be present and whether the ashes come back to your vet or to your home. For a cat, a small urn or keepsake box is usually enough.
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[2], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[3]. Prices in Luxembourg depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |

| Ireland (cats up to 10 kg) | n/a | €250[3] |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150[3] |

What's allowed in Luxembourg after your cat dies
If you leave your cat at the clinic without choosing, most practices will arrange communal cremation by default, and you won't get ashes back. That's legal and dignified, but it can't be undone. Before you sign a release form, check that the box you've ticked matches what you want. The notes below then cover what Luxembourg allows for burial and scattering.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if the idea appeals. Paw prints can only be made before the cremation, and clipping fur is simpler now than later.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your vet. If you'd rather, we can send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; a cat's ashes fit in a small container that can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.
Keeping your cat close
A clay paw print on the mantel, a small vial of shed whiskers or a lock of fur sealed in a frame are keepsakes only a cat leaves behind. Some families in Luxembourg also make a donation of food or litter to a Luxembourg shelter in their cat's name; ask first what they can use, as opened bags often can't be accepted.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my cat's ashes in Luxembourg?
Your own garden is the simplest place, and private land with the owner's permission is fine too. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules. Because a cat's ashes are only a cup or so, many families scatter a little and keep the rest in a small urn or keepsake at home.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Luxembourg?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
How much does cat cremation cost in Luxembourg?
Prices across Luxembourg depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Luxembourg?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Luxembourg?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in Luxembourg often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Luxembourg?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
