The local attitude to cremation
Local habits show up in small ways. Where about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, as in Japan, relatives are more likely to keep an urn themselves and less likely to question yours. Some owners keep a cat's ashes so they can one day be placed with a person, or scattered together with another cat from the same home. If that's something you'd like, keep the ashes sealed and labelled, and check the rules for any cemetery you have in mind.

Yokohama weather and timing
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm in Yokohama, keep your cat in the coolest room with wrapped ice packs alongside them and ask for collection within the day. Local rules in Kanagawa
You don't need a permit to have your cat cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them in the garden or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Kanagawa.
Japan has about 8.847 million[6] pet cats, more than its dogs, and indoor-only cats live 16.34 years[7] on average, about two years longer than cats that go outside[8]. Legally, pets are treated as waste[9], and some ward collection routes don't return ashes[10]. Pet funerals with a short ceremony are common; ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨).
What to do next, one step at a time
- Take a breath. The next hour asks nothing of you. When a cat dies at home, set them down on a towel, gently close the eyes if they'll stay shut, and fold the legs under as though they're curled up asleep.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a small clipping of fur from the chest or behind a back leg, shed whiskers from their bed, their collar or tag.
- Place your cat in a box or basket on top of the blanket they slept on, then move it to whichever room stays coolest and shut the door to keep other animals out.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, or bring your cat in yourself, and ask for the total in writing.
- Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your cat, and leave the food bowls out until you feel ready to move them.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Yokohama pets live in apartments near Minato Mirai and Kannai, in hillside homes on the city's steep slopes, and in newer suburbs stretching inland toward Tokyo. More households here own a car than in central Tokyo, but home collection or a mobile cremation vehicle is still popular. How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Yokohama page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Yokohama?
Usually yes. Kawasaki is about 7 miles away, Setagaya is about 14 miles away and Tokyo is about 16 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why do quotes for the same cat cremation in Yokohama vary so much?
In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which container is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cat cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote, then compare the cremation line on its own.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Yokohama?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Yokohama offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
