Cat Cremation in Lombardy: what to know
In Lombardy, a lot of cat aftercare now starts before a death rather than after it. Many owners of senior cats book a home goodbye in advance, choose a crematory while their cat is still comfortable and ask their vet to put those wishes on file. If your cat has been diagnosed with kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or cancer, this page and your city page can help you plan at your own pace.
Community cats are part of life across Lombardy: colonies behind shops, farm cats, the neighbor's cat who adopted your porch. When one of them dies, the person who cared for them often has no idea what's allowed. You can arrange a private or communal cremation for a cat you didn't legally own, and many Lombardy rescues know low-cost options. The city pages below list local detail.

Cremation traditions in Lombardy
Only about 38.16%[1] of people in Lombardy are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition, and for cats that often means a small grave in the garden. Pet cremation is still widely available, though, and many cat owners choose it because it lets them keep their cat close even if they move. Your vet will be used to both requests.
We take the Lombardy percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What cat owners in Lombardy typically pay
In Lombardy, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, with the fee added to your vet bill. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for a cat, and whether collection is included.
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[2] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[3] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for Italy.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (all pets) | €85 to €205[4] | €165 to €375[4] |
| Ireland (cats up to 10 kg) | n/a | €250[5] |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150[5] |
| Norway (1 to 20 kg) | from NOK 1,190[6] | NOK 3,790[6] |
We built the this numbers from Hjertedyr (Norway) and Donegal Pet Crematorium, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local rules in Lombardy
One rule matters more than any other if your cat bit or scratched someone in the last couple of weeks, or died after sudden changes in behavior: tell your vet before anything else. Where rabies occurs, public health rules may require testing, and that has to happen before cremation. In almost every other case, the rules below only come into play once you choose what to do with the ashes or the body.
Italy has about 10.2 million pet cats[8], more than its dogs. Pet cremation is widely available through private crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individuale (ashes returned) or collettiva. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune first.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, during surgery, in an oxygen cage or overnight on a drip, nothing needs deciding before you leave. Ask the team to keep your cat in their cold room while you think.
- Ask to see your cat if you weren't there. Most hospitals will bring your cat to a quiet room wrapped in a blanket, and many owners say it helped more than they expected.
- Request a copy of the notes if the death was unexpected. You can ask for a post-mortem, but it has to happen before cremation, so say so now.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. The provider an emergency hospital normally uses isn't necessarily your regular vet's, and you can pick either, or one you found on your own.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly on the release form, and ask for a copy with your cat's name on it.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or ask the team to send the blanket with your cat.
Keeping your cat's memory close in Lombardy
If your cat loved the garden, burying some ashes under a shrub, a patch of catnip or a sunny rock can give you a place to sit with them. Some Lombardy families plant something that flowers around the day their cat came home. There's no right way, and if children are grieving too, let them choose or make something of their own.

Questions people ask
Do cats outnumber dogs in Lombardy?
In much of Europe, yes: the continent has about 108.3 million[2] pet cats against 89.6 million[3] dogs. The balance differs by country, and in a few places dogs still lead. Either way, every pet crematorium in Lombardy handles cats routinely, and individual cremation for a cat sits in the lowest price band.
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Lombardy?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
Is cat cremation common in Lombardy?
For people, about 38.16%[1] of deaths in Lombardy end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their cat close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and cities where many cats live indoors.
How much does cat cremation cost in Lombardy?
Prices across Lombardy depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Lombardy?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Lombardy?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities, councils and landlords can be stricter than the wider rules. Dig deep enough to keep foxes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later.
