Cat Cremation in Hong Kong: what to know
In Hong Kong, most families arrange their cat's cremation through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. You can almost always contact a crematorium directly too, which can mean more choice of small urns, a witnessed service or a clearer price, and with a cat it's easy to bring them in yourself.
Cat cremation in Hong Kong follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with the ashes returned, or communal cremation without. What differs from country to country is how services are organised, what they cost and which rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers Hong Kong as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Local habits around cremation and burial
With about 96.96%[1] of people in Hong Kong choosing cremation, you'll rarely need to explain your decision. It also shapes what's on offer. Providers in high-cremation areas often stock small urns sized for cats, keepsake lockets and whisker or fur vials, because families ask for them. Look at the full range before you choose; with so little ash, even a tiny keepsake box will do.

Cat cremation prices for Hong Kong families
In Hong Kong, one provider lists basic individual cremation at about HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[2], the band most cats fall into. Wherever you are, give your cat's approximate weight when you ask Hong Kong providers for quotes, and check whether collection and the return of the ashes are included.
Pet funeral customs in much of Asia are more elaborate than in the West, and prices reflect that: a simple cremation for a cat can be modest, while a full funeral with a ceremony and a columbarium niche costs considerably more. The table shows published examples for small pets like cats.
| Place | Example price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 communal / SGD 280 private[3] | Columbarium niches extra |
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | ¥14,300 communal / ¥22,000 individual[4] | Tax included |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | HKD 1,300 individual[2] | Basic individual cremation |
| Japan (1 to 5 kg pet) | about ¥60,000[5] | Funeral package with ceremony |

What's allowed in Hong Kong after your cat dies
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Hong Kong and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
In Hong Kong, about 4.0%[7] of households keep a cat. The government collection route sends remains to landfill[8]; between 2009 and 2013 it collected 12,787 cats[9]. Families who want ashes returned arrange private cremation, from about HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[2]. Ask whether a farewell room is included.
What to do when your cat dies in Hong Kong
- If the death was expected, you and your vet probably agreed arrangements earlier. Phone and check they still stand.
- If it was sudden, an accident on the road, a fall, an illness nobody saw coming, phone your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Hong Kong. They will walk you through what to do next.
- Keep your cat cool and indoors, wrapped in a towel inside a lidded box, especially in warm weather.
- Gather a few things to send with your cat: the blanket they loved, a well-chewed toy mouse, a card the kids have written.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my cat be cremated alone, how do you track which cat is which, and when do I get the ashes?
- Confirm the price in writing before collection, including pickup and the container.
Remembering your cat in Hong Kong
Memorial jewelry, glass art with a little ash inside, an engraved garden stone or a portrait painted from a favorite photo are all popular keepsakes. Because a cat leaves only a small amount of ash, decide early how much you'd like to set aside; most makers need only a pinch, but it's easier to keep some back before an urn is sealed.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to have my cat cremated in Hong Kong?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a cat cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your cat's body in the garden or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part first.
How many communities do you cover in Hong Kong?
We currently have local cat cremation guides for 2 communities in Hong Kong, including Hong Kong and Kowloon. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Hong Kong?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in Hong Kong often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
Where can I scatter my cat's ashes in Hong Kong?
Your own garden is the simplest place, and private land with the owner's permission is fine too. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules. Because a cat's ashes are only a cup or so, many families scatter a little and keep the rest in a small urn or keepsake at home.
Is cat cremation common in Hong Kong?
For people, about 96.96%[1] of deaths in Hong Kong end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their cat close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and cities where many cats live indoors.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Hong Kong?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
