Ask for that in writing, since a communal cremation returns no ashes.
In a metro the size of Cologne, traffic and parking shape the day more than distance. A crematory van crossing town at rush hour may give you a two- or three-hour window rather than a time. If that's hard to manage, ask whether you can drop your cat at the nearest partner clinic instead, or whether a provider nearer Dusseldorf covers your address. Cremation traditions in Germany
High cremation rates, about 76.0%[1] for people in Germany, often go hand in hand with pet crematories with viewing rooms and set farewell times. Many will let you stay while your cat is placed in the chamber, or wait on site and take the ashes home the same day. It costs a little more and needs booking, but for some owners, seeing it through is what lets them rest.

Seasons, collection and burial in Cologne
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your cat cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected, ideally in a lined box or basket in the coolest room. What North Rhine-Westphalia allows: burial, scattering and more
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask how they identify each animal and what private really means. The rules in North Rhine-Westphalia mostly cover what happens next: where a cat can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[7], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[8], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[9]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
Step by step in Cologne
- If your cat dies at night, nobody needs a phone call before daylight. Carry your cat to the coolest room in the house and lay a towel over them.
- Put a towel or pad underneath. It's normal for a cat's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your cat into a sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. They'll fit the basket or box more easily, and they'll look more peaceful when you say goodbye.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Cologne. Tell them where your cat is and whether you can bring them in.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers pickup, the type of cremation (private or communal) and whatever the ashes come home in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of the pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, and the name of whoever will call when they're ready.
Ways to remember your cat locally
Cologne is a city of apartment buildings, many of them rebuilt after the war, with courtyards and stairwells rather than private gardens. How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Cologne page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cologne?
Usually yes. Bonn is about 15 miles away, Dusseldorf is about 22 miles away and Essen is about 36 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my cat?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[6]. A cat's small size makes a garden burial easy where it's allowed, but cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want your cat close. You can combine them by burying the ashes.
Why did my cat hide before they died?
Hiding is instinct. A cat who feels ill or weak looks for somewhere small, quiet and protected, like under a bed, in a closet or beneath a deck. It doesn't mean your cat was frightened of you or that you missed something obvious; cats are very good at concealing illness until late. Many owners find their cat this way, and it's okay to need help with what comes next.
Will a pet collection service come to an apartment in Cologne?
Yes. City providers regularly collect from apartments and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's an elevator, where they can park and whether the concierge needs notice. With a cat, one person with a covered basket is usually enough, so collection is quick and discreet. If you'd rather, you can also take your cat to the clinic yourself by car or taxi.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a cat?
In a private cremation your cat is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes come back; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share the chamber with dividers. Private typically costs about 2.0x[10] the communal price.
