Local rules in Hamburg
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Hamburg allows. Keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole cat and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces, and renters normally need the landlord's permission for any garden burial.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[8], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[9], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[10]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
What to do next, one step at a time
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their cat for an hour or two, and it's fine to hold them.
- Let your other cats see the body if there are others at home. One might sniff and leave; another might settle beside their friend for a while. Both are ordinary.
- Make a keepsake if you'd like one. A paw print must be taken before cremation, and fur is easier to clip now too.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly. We can also send you local options.
- Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; a cat's ashes fit in a small container that can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.
Ways to remember your cat locally
If your cat loved the garden, burying some ashes under a shrub, a patch of catnip or a sunny rock can give you a place to sit with them.
