Cat Cremation in Berlin: what to know
In Berlin, as in most places, the vet is where the process usually starts. That's no bad thing: vets see loss often and work with local crematories. But you're not obliged to use the provider your vet suggests. Calling a crematory directly, or bringing your cat in yourself, is normal and can save money for exactly the same service.
If you're reading this because your cat is old or unwell, you're already doing something kind: planning ahead. Cats hide illness well, so the end often comes faster than owners expect. In Berlin, one phone call to your vet or a crematory now can settle the big questions, so that when the time comes you can focus on your cat.

Why cremation is familiar in Berlin, or isn't
When cremation is as routine as it is in Berlin (roughly 76.0%[1] of human funerals), the risk is assuming rather than asking. A busy clinic may note "cremation" without saying which kind. Say the words you mean, private with ashes returned or communal without, and ask for them on the form. It's a two-minute check that prevents a mistake nobody can fix later.
That Berlin rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Published prices give a sense of the range. In Germany, collective pet cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[2], with cats at the low end. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation at €250 for cats up to 10 kg[3]. Prices in Berlin depend on local providers, so ask for a written quote.
Across Europe, about 9.2 million[4] pet cats die each year, by our estimate, so every pet crematorium near Berlin handles cats routinely. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether you can be present and whether the ashes come back to your vet or to your home. For a cat, a small urn or keepsake box is usually enough.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |

Burial and scattering rules for Berlin
Most of the decisions after a cat dies are yours alone. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Berlin and your local council or city may regulate, and, in some places, updating your cat's microchip record so the database knows they've died.
Germany has about 15.7 million pet cats[7], far more than its dogs. Burying a cat on your own land is allowed with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas[8], and there are roughly 120 pet cemeteries[9]. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If you find your cat outdoors, take a box, a towel and a pair of gloves with you. Ease them onto the towel, then carry them back to the house or the car.
- If you're not sure the cat is yours, or someone nearby found them, any vet can check for a microchip. It takes a clinic only a minute or two.
- Keep your cat in a cool, closed room at home until you've spoken to your vet or a crematory that serves Berlin.
- Ask for private or communal cremation and the full price, including collection or drop-off.
- Update the microchip record and tell anyone who helped you look for your cat, so they can stop searching.
- Give yourself some grace. Sudden losses, especially of outdoor cats, bring guilt that isn't deserved. Cats who roam are living the life they chose.
Remembering your cat, in Berlin and beyond
Many Berlin families keep their cat's ashes indoors, near a window or the chair their cat claimed, rather than scattering them outdoors, especially for an indoor cat whose whole world was the home. A cat's ashes fit in a small urn or a keepsake box, and some people move a pinch into a locket so they can carry it.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my cat's ashes in Berlin?
Your own garden is the simplest place, and private land with the owner's permission is fine too. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules. Because a cat's ashes are only a cup or so, many families scatter a little and keep the rest in a small urn or keepsake at home.
How long does it take to get my cat's ashes back in Berlin?
Many families receive their cat's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where pets travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Small pets' ashes are sometimes returned via your vet or by courier. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Is cat cremation cheaper in small towns in Berlin?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can cost more than the cremation of a cat. Bringing your cat in yourself is the easiest saving anywhere.
How much does cat cremation cost in Berlin?
Prices across Berlin depend mostly on whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade; a cat's weight barely changes the price. Big-city providers may charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Do cats outnumber dogs in Berlin?
In much of Europe, yes: the continent has about 108.3 million[10] pet cats against 89.6 million[11] dogs. The balance differs by country, and in a few places dogs still lead. Either way, every pet crematorium in Berlin handles cats routinely, and individual cremation for a cat sits in the lowest price band.
Can I arrange cremation for a community or feral cat in Berlin?
Yes. You don't have to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask a vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone is looking for them. Rescue groups and trap-neuter-return volunteers in Berlin often know a provider offering low-cost communal cremation, and private cremation is available if you'd like the ashes.
