Pets in Copenhagen live very urban lives, in courtyard flats in Nørrebro and Vesterbro, on balconies above the harbor and in small gardens in the outer districts. Because so many households have no garden of their own, burial at home is rarely an option, and many owners choose individual cremation so there is something tangible to keep. Ask clearly whether your pet will be cremated alone, and how long it takes before the ashes come back.
Most Copenhageners live in apartments, often several floors up without a lift, and many households don't own a car. That makes moving a pet who has died harder than it sounds, whether it is a large animal or a carrier that has to go down four flights of stairs. Before you try to manage it by cargo bike or taxi, ask whether the provider or your vet can collect from home, and mention the stairs so they come prepared.
Big cities have big community cat populations, and plenty of Copenhagen residents feed a colony in an alley, a car park or a back garden. If a cat you cared for has died, you can still arrange a private cremation; you don't need to be the legal owner. Many rescue groups and trap-neuter-return networks in large cities also know which providers offer communal cremation at a modest price for cats like these. It's a kind thing to do, and it's allowed.

Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and used to small animals, so a private cat cremation, a witnessed service or a paw print is rarely a special request. Use that choice: ask two providers for a written price rather than accepting the first one you're given.

Burial and scattering rules for Capital Region
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Capital Region, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about burying your cat in the garden, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes.
Denmark has about 696,000[7] pet cats, slightly more than its dogs. Vets usually arrange cremation through a pet crematorium, with a choice between collective cremation and individual cremation with the ashes returned. Ask for the price for a cat, whether collection is included and how long the return takes. Check your municipality's rules before burying a cat in the garden.
What to do next, one step at a time
- If your cat died at the clinic or an emergency hospital, whether on the operating table, in oxygen or on fluids through the night, you can walk out without having decided anything. The team can hold your cat in their cold storage until you've had time to think.
- Ask to see your cat if you missed the moment. Hospitals will usually wrap your cat in a blanket and bring them into a private room, and people often find it helps far more than they thought it would.
- Request a copy of the notes when a death came out of nowhere. A post-mortem is an option too, but only before the cremation, so raise it straight away if you want one.
- Tell the hospital which crematory you want. An emergency hospital's usual partner may differ from your own vet's, and you can name either or one you found yourself.
- Check that the hospital records private or communal correctly when they fill in the release paperwork, and take away a copy that carries your cat's name.
- Collect your cat's collar, carrier and blanket, or have the staff keep the blanket with your cat for the journey.
Memorials and keepsakes for your cat
Copenhagen's weather is mild but grey and wet much of the year, and winter days are short. That gives you a little breathing room, since a pet kept in a cool room will stay stable for a day while you decide. In the warmer weeks of July and August, move faster and keep the body out of sunny rooms and away from radiators.

Is cremation common in Denmark?
For people, yes: about 86.48%[1] of Denmark deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Copenhagen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Copenhagen?
Usually yes. Odense is about 87 miles away and Aarhus is about 98 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
How much ash will I get back from my cat?
Much less than people expect. Cremated remains weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight[3], so a 12 lb cat would be expected to return about 6.7 oz[8], roughly a teacup's worth. An urn of about 12 cubic inches is usually enough[6]. Our urn size calculator works it out from your cat's weight.
Can I bury my cat in the garden in Capital Region?
In many places you can, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and owning the property. Rules vary within Capital Region, so check with your city or council before digging. Dig deep enough to keep foxes, coyotes and dogs away. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your cat with you and bury the ashes later if you wish.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
