Vienna, Austria
How cat cremation works in Vienna
Vienna is famous for its relationship with death and for taking funerals seriously, and that shows in how many residents treat a pet's passing. An individual cremation with ashes returned in a proper urn is a common choice, as is a small ceremony with family. When you ask for options, say whether you want a private cremation, whether you would like to attend, and whether you want ashes back.
Vienna has hot summers and cold, grey winters, so how quickly you need to act depends on the season. In July, keep your pet in the coolest room with a cool pack under a towel; in January, a cool hallway may be enough for a short time. Old apartment buildings rarely have a garden of their own, and burial in the courtyard is not an option, which is one reason cremation is the usual choice in the city.
If your cat died at an emergency or specialty hospital in Vienna, aftercare is usually arranged from there, and it may be with a different crematory from the one your regular vet uses. You're free to ask for your cat to be transferred to the provider you prefer. It usually takes one phone call, and it's worth making if you want a witnessed cremation, a particular urn or simply a clearer price.
Vienna is home to about 1,897,000 people.
clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[1]
CareCredit's 2025 study put US cat euthanasia at $158 in clinic and $359 at home, cat cremation at $180 and cat cemetery burial at $566.
3-5% of body weight[2]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation in Austria, and what it means for cat owners
Whatever the local customs around human funerals, cat cremation has become the usual choice for families who want to keep their cat close, not least because a cat's ashes fit in something the size of a teacup. The key questions in Vienna are the same as everywhere: private or communal, the total cost, timing and paperwork.
Vienna weather and timing
Whatever the season, ask any provider near Vienna where your cat will wait between collection and cremation. A good crematory keeps animals in refrigerated storage and can tell you roughly how long your cat will be there. In warm weather that answer matters more; in cold weather it mostly affects when the ashes come home.

Cat cremation costs around Vienna
Cats outnumber dogs in much of Europe: there are about 108.3 million[3] pet cats on the continent against 89.6 million[4] dogs. Prices follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a cat sits in the lowest weight band. The table shows published examples to give you a feel for Austria.

Rules worth knowing in Austria
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Austria before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in, and for a cat, burial is the one people most often ask about.
In Austria, your vet will usually offer individual cremation, with the ashes returned, or collective cremation without. Burying a cat on your own land is generally possible, with conditions set by your state and municipality. Ask for a written price for a cat and whether collection from your home or the clinic is included.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your cat died while you were away, in the care of a sitter, a neighbor or a boarding cattery, your first call is to whoever was looking after them. Find out what took place and where your cat is at this moment.
- Ask them to keep your cat cool: a towel over the body, a box with a lid, the chilliest room available, or a trip to the closest vet if the house is going to heat up.
- Give your vet permission by phone or email so they can keep your cat until you're back. With a call in advance, most practices around Vienna will take a cat brought in by a sitter.
- Decide whether you want to see your cat before cremation. The clinic can keep them for several days if that's your wish; when you're a long way from home, a photograph taken by the vet may be a kinder option.
- Arrange the cremation remotely when coming home isn't possible yet. You can give instructions and pay over the phone, and the clinic will keep the ashes until you return.
- Be kind to the person who was looking after your cat. Older cats sometimes decline fast, and a sitter who called for help did the right thing.
Keeping your cat close
Most Viennese pet owners live in apartments, from old Altbau buildings with high ceilings and steep stairwells to large municipal housing blocks. If your pet dies at home, think about how they will be carried down, especially a larger animal in a building without a lift. Pet aftercare services in and around Vienna usually collect from your home or your vet. Mention the floor and whether there is a lift when you ask for options.

Questions people ask
How long until I get my cat's ashes back in Vienna?
Many families get their cat's ashes back within about one to two weeks, and 5 to 10 days is commonly quoted in the US[6]. In a large city it can be quicker; where the cremation happens in a larger centre like Vienna, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Can I keep my cat's whiskers and fur before cremation?
Yes, and it's easiest before collection. Clip a small lock of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind a back leg, and keep it in an envelope or small bag. Shed whiskers turn up in beds and on windowsills for weeks, and a glass vial keeps them safe. Many providers can also take a fur clipping or paw print for you if you ask on the first call.
Can I cremate a stray or community cat I've been feeding?
Yes. You don't need to be the registered owner to arrange cremation for a cat you cared for. Ask your vet to scan for a microchip first, in case someone else is looking for them. Local rescues and trap-neuter-return groups around Vienna often know a provider with low-cost communal cremation, and a private cremation is possible if you'd like the ashes back.
How do I know I'm getting my own cat's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your cat from collection through cremation and returns with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your cat is alone in the chamber, since some providers use partitioned cremation. Get the answer in writing.
Can someone collect my cat from home in Vienna?
Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Vienna offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Because a cat is small, many families also bring their cat to the vet or crematory themselves in a carrier or lined box, which usually saves the collection charge. Either way, ask for the price in writing first.
Will a pet collection service come to an apartment in Vienna?
Yes. City providers regularly collect from apartments and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's an elevator, where they can park and whether the concierge needs notice. With a cat, one person with a covered basket is usually enough, so collection is quick and discreet. If you'd rather, you can also take your cat to the clinic yourself by car or taxi.
